While Garrett is originally from Minnesota he has had stints in Washington and Wyoming before settling in to Central Oregon with his family. He and his wife are raising two daughters who love sports, love the outdoors, and keep us on our toes in the best way possible. Garrett's cancer journey began in March 2020 when he was diagnosed with an avocado sized grade III primary brain tumor on the right side of his brain. Over the following two years he had three surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Since then, his surveillance MRIs have been stable — something he is deeply grateful for. He loves getting outside with his family, rock climbing, and coaching his daughters' sports teams.

Q: What inspires you to get up in the morning?

A: My two daughters. They inspire me to live up to my potential each day — not just to provide for our family, but to model what it looks like to choose the life you want.

Q: What are you scared of?
A: I fear recurrence of my brain cancer — who wouldn't? But what scares me more is the possibility of not living out my life's purpose by not using my strengths and values to their fullest. That's why I have to see both my cancer journey and my soul's journey all the way through.

Q: People often underestimate the power of...
A: Action. We can't change tomorrow if we don't change today. Cancer and many other unchosen adversities we face in life understandably cause us to enter into a state of paralysis. We can't change our diagnosis or affliction, but we can take action on what we do control. You don't have to feel capable to start. Starting is what builds capability.

Q: I am in my power when...

A: Making decisions that help others while accounting for the needs of all. When I couple my values with my strengths, I become a force for my community, my family, and myself; moving forward together.

Q: If you could have one super power, what would you choose?

A: Teleportation. There are so many places and experiences on this beautiful planet, and whether or not cancer is part of the picture, our time is finite. Teleportation would let me squeeze more into that finite time. Since that's not possible, it's all the more important to know who you are and what you want.
